Unlike the traditions of the secular New Year, we do not focus on making well-intended, rarely fulfilled resolutions. As Jews prepare for the High Holy Days, before we look ahead, we must look back. Was it a year of peace in my home and in my community? Were the people I love in good health in body, mind and spirit? Did I examine the things that made me angry or frustrated or dismissive of another person, and in that examination, did I take responsibility for contributing to that strife? Did I put forth an effort to make the world a better place, a safer place, a more compassionate place, even in some small way? Did I act in ways that show my profound gratitude for the blessings that surround me? Did I listen – truly listen -- to the still, small voice within me and take guidance from it?
A new year approaches and a new journey begins. Those same questions offer a path to shaping my behavior in the coming months. I will be judged by how I take that journey because, clearly, I have a map to lead the way. Shana Tova U'Metukah, Becca Hornstein
