CHAI KIDS CORNER

Welcome back to school and to youth group. I hope all of your children have had a great summer whether they were at camp, on family vacations or just relaxing at home. By now children are back in regular school and are getting back into their school-year routines. This month religious school starts back again, as does our Jr. Youth Group, Chai Kids. Actually, for those who were in town in early August, we had a couple of ‘before-year’ pool parties at Rabbi Yakar’s house. Both Katanty (3rd & 4th grades) and Bonim (5th & 6th grades) had a chance to have a BBQ lunch, and play some games in the pool. Both parties were enjoyed by everyone.

This month we will be having another “BIG BASH” to kick off the year. This will be a huge party with our 3rd – 6th graders and their families.  “This was an amazing event”, “My son said that this was the best time he had ever had” were just a couple of the comments we received after last year’s party.

We will have music, games and dancing with Limelight entertainment, magazine covers and more by GreenScreen Entertainment, Ben & Jerry’s ice cream, pizza, photos by May Photography, and an amazing atmosphere provided by Envision Event Décor.

This will take place right after religious school on September 7. Please see the flyer in the Chai Lights for details and to RSVP. I really hope you will bring your children to this event.

If you have any questions about this party or Chai Kids, please contact me at jbrodsky@templechai.com or 602-971-1234 ext. 203.

Shana Tova - May you and your loved ones have a sweet, happy and healthy New Year,

Joan Brodsky

What is Chai Kids?
Chai Kids is the junior youth group of Temple Chai that includes grades 3 through 8. We refer to our 3rd and 4th grade group as Katanty, 5th and 6th grades as Bonim and our combined 7th & 8th grade group as Club 78.

Katanty - Meet new friends in a safe and comfortable environment outside of religious school and participate in great activities such as a scavenger hunt around the temple, a luau and swim party, cosmic bowling, and even a mitzvah project or two. Katanty will also participate in an exciting Shabbaton scheduled for October 5-6, 2007.

Bonim - Begin building on those existing friendships to form lasting relationships while enjoying events such as Castles N’ Coasters, laser tag, a hayride and BBQ, and more great mitzvah projects. Bonim will also participate in an incredible retreat planned for November 2-4, 2007.

Club 78 - Share in the experiences of those who are going through or just went through Bar/Bat Mitzvah. Learn how to take on more responsibility by exploring new leadership roles like helping to plan monthly events such as an overnight in the desert or under the sukkah and more. Take a more active role in tikun olam by doing more mitzvah projects. Remember - Club 78 is the gateway to TCTY- our amazing High School Youth Group.

What are the goals of Chai Kids?
Our goal is simple. It is to allow our children to have fun and to be in a safe, supervised environment and to “connect” with and create friendships with other children in the religious school.

When do Chai Kids meet and how do I get information and sign up for events?
We meet once a month, usually on a Sunday, right after religious school. Some events may take place on a Saturday evening. A flyer called the Chai Kids Monthly with an RSVP form appears each month in the “Chai Lights” and can be found on this website and in the temple and religious school offices to let you know the activities for the month. Flyers are also circulated during religious school to the children and emails are sent out.

Who runs Chai Kids?
Joan Brodsky, is the Chai Kids director for Katanty and Bonim. She can be reached at 602-971-1234 or jbrodsky@templechai.com. Erin Purvin is the Club 78 and TCTY (high school youth group) director and can be reached at 602-971-1234 or epurvin@templechai.com.

How much do events cost?
Each month there will be a different charge, according to the event. Sometimes it may be a minimal charge to cover an inexpensive event and the transportation, and other times it may be more, depending on where the children are going, whether lunch is included in the price, etc. However, scholarships are available. We never want a child not participating due to cost. Please contact Joan Brodsky for scholarship information at
jbrodsky@templechai.com or Erin Purvin (Club 78) at epurvin@templechai.com.

Picking up children from an event:
When picking up your child after an event, there will be a sign-out sheet for you to sign. Please make every effort to adhere to this policy so that the advisors can keep track of children leaving. For the safety and security of our children, our policy states that we will not allow parents to pick up children from events off campus (unless it is been specified for that particular event).
